Excitement builds around the house, this is your time to shine, who knows, perhaps you’ve even decided to invite the neighbours across.

But, then disaster strikes — as you go to light up the barbeque, you realise the gas has run out. What can initially seem like a daunting task is simplified by this walk-through guide on how to disconnect and replace your barbeque gas bottle. Not only will you have carried out the challenge in a safe efficient manner, your hero status will be re-established as you retake the ‘king of the grill’ position.


  • Firstly, turn the regulator switch back to its off position. This will ensure any gas which is trapped within the pipeline will be used up before continuing.
  • The next step then is to turn off all the gas burners. This can be done by simply turning all the barbeque controls to the off position. Although this may seem like somewhat of a given, people do forget.
  • Once all the switches have bene turned off, you are now at the position to detach your gas bottle. In order to do so, push the button on your regulator switch inwards towards the valve. The bottle should now easily disconnect.


  • Position your barbeque on firm ground and place your gas bottle close enough to ensure that you are not at risk of stretching the hose. Please ensure your cylinder is kept upright and, on the ground, beside the BBQ, when in use.
  • Ensure the hose is securely connected to the regulator and they are clean and not damaged.
  • Make sure the switch on the regulator is in the off position. Turn clockwise into the 3 o’clock position.
  • To connect to the bottle, check the valve is clean and connect to the bottle. Press down firmly until you hear a metallic click signifying the collar has locked onto the valve. NB. This procedure may require more than one attempt to achieve a secure connection.
  • To start using your BBQ, ensure the BBQ gas controls are switched off.
  • The gas is now on. Light your BBQ as advised by the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Once you’ve finished, you can simply turn off the regulator to allow the gas to burn off and then finally turn off the BBQ’s gas controls
  • If you need to change your empty gas bottle, turn off the regulator (by turning the switch clockwise to the 3 o’clock position). And then push in the switch to disconnect from the cylinder. And then turn off the BBQ, this will burn off any residual gas left in the BBQ.
  • Push in the button on the regulator and lift the regulator off the bottle.

Cleaning up

Once you’ve whipped up a storm and become the talk of the neighbourhood thanks to your specialty steaks, you’ve reached everyone’s least enjoyable stage of the barbeque – cleaning up afterwards.
