Charisa sigala: jiu jitsu journey & fitness mentor for especially women’s

Charisa Sigala is from Rancho Cucamonga, California. She holds a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and a purple belt in Judo. As an Olympic hopeful, she trains with the American team and competes in international tournaments. She has trained under several world-class coaches including Mike Fowler at Bluegrass Academy her current home. Charisa describes herself as a “people person” and says that being involved in different activities outside of sports has made her who she is today. However, it was her mother who first introduced her to competitive sports when she was four years old. When Charisa was about five years old, she enrolled in gymnastics lessons at a local gym where she continued training for two years before moving on to another sport. The young girl then started playing basketball with friends and soon discovered that this sport fit her perfectly because it allowed her to compete against boys while remaining feminine. In addition to playing basketball and competing against boys, Charisa also played soccer and tennis which helped develop her fundamentals as well as developing hand-eye coordination and footwork needed for other sports like football, volleyball and soccer on the court or field (soccer).

Success of Charisa Sigala

In 2016, Sigala won the silver medal at the Pan American Championships in the -55 kg division of judo and was selected as an alternate for the 2016 Rio Olympics, where she ultimately did not compete. In 2017, she was also selected as an alternate for the World Judo Championships. In addition, she participated in the 2017 IBJJF Pan American Championships in the -55 kg category and earned a bronze medal. Sigala’s judo achievements were also exceptional. In 2015, she won gold in the Pan American Championships in the -63 kg division. In the same year, she was also the runner-up in the Pacific Coast Grand Championship in the -63 kg division and won a silver medal at the Pan American Games. In 2016, Sigala was a double gold medallist at the New York Open in the -63 kg and -66 kg divisions.

Sigala received her high school diploma from Cajon High School in Cajon, California. During her senior year, Sigala was named the Female Athlete of the Year by the Cajon Bulletin, the school’s sports newspaper. During her high school years, Sigala won two state championships in track and specialized in long-distance running. In her senior year, Sigala set three school records and competed at the CIF California State Meet, where she placed fourth overall in the long-distance section with a time of 17:09.36 minutes. She also won the Cajon Invitational in the same year with a time of 16:25.80 minutes. In addition, Sigala also excelled at basketball where she was selected for the CIF All-Los Angeles City Team for two consecutive years.

In 2017, Sigala attended Fresno State University and played for the Fresno State Bulldogs. Sigala was an outstanding basketball player while at Fresno State. Sigala was an integral part of the Bulldogs’ record-breaking teams, which won both the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) and Mountain West Conference championships. In her senior year, Sigala was selected as the WAC Player of the Year, Mountain West Player of the Year and a preseason candidate for the Wade Wescott National Freshman of the Year award. She was also named to the All-WAC first team and the All-Mountain West first team. Sigala was also named the Mountain West Conference Women’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She was also involved in several other extracurricular activities such as the chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers, and the Beta Mu chapter.

Sigala has become an inspiration for young athletes and has helped develop the next generation of martial artists. Sigala started a foundation called Youth Empowered (Y.E) to help encourage youth to set goals and pursue their passions. The foundation also provides scholarships for young people who want to pursue a career in sports.
