Located in Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, Yellowstone National Park is an American national park. Yellowstone was the first national park in the U.S. It is known for its wildlife and the many geothermal features. The Old Faithful geyser is one of its most popular features. For around 11,00 years, native Americans have lived in the Yellowstone. It has an area of 3,468.4 square miles. Yellowstone National Park comprise of lakes, valleys, rivers and mountain ranges. In Yellowstone, there is half of the world’s geothermal features. They are all fuelled by ongoing volcanism. Most of the land area of the National Park is covered with lava flows and rocks from volcanic eruptions. Yellowstone was named UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978.

Old Faithful– It is the most popular geyser. It is in form of a cone.It is a predictable geothermal feature. It erupts every 44 to 125 minutes.

Grand Prismatic Spring – Located in the Midway Geyser Basin, it is the largest hot spring in the UnitedStates.By an optical prism, red, orange, yellow, green and blue, its colours match the rainbow dispersion of white light.

Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone – It is the first large valley on the Yellowstone River down from the Yellowstone Falls. The Canyon is around 24 miles long between 800 to 1,200ft deep and from 0.40 to 1.21 km wide.

Yellowstone Caldera – It is a volcanic caldera and super volcano in Yellowstone National Park. It is sometimes referred as Yellowstone super volcano. It is in the northwest corner at Wyoming. The Caldera major features measure about 55 by 72 km. It was created during large eruptions that took place 2.1 million, 1.3 million and 630,000 years ago.

Yellowstone Lake–In Yellowstone National Park, the lake is the largest body of water. Above sea level, it is 7,732 feet and covers 136 square miles with 110 miles of shoreline. The average depth is 139ft while its greatest depth is at least 390ft. In North America, the Yellowstone Lake is the largest freshwater lake above 2,100m. During winter the lake freezes and can remain frozen until late May or early June. The ice, around 0.91 m thick, covers much of the lake except where hot spring is covered by shallow water.

Yellowstone falls – It consists of two major waterfalls. The Yellowstone river flows in the north direction from Yellowstone Lake, it leaves the Jayden Valley and it plunges first over Upper Yellowstone Falls, then a 400 m down over Lower Yellowstone Falls. It then enters the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone which is up to 304 m deep.

Hayden Valley – It is a large sub-alpine valley straddling the Yellowstone River between Yellowstone Falls and Yellowstone Lake. Its floor along the river is an ancient lake bed from a time when Yellowstone Lake was much larger. It is known as one of the best locations to wildlife in Yellowstone.
