The average depth is 139ft while its greatest depth is at least 390ft. In North America, the Yellowstone Lake is the largest freshwater lake above 2,100m. During winter the lake freezes and can remain frozen until late May or early June. The ice, around 0.91 m thick, covers much of the lake except where hot spring is covered by shallow water.
Yellowstone falls – It consists of two major waterfalls. The Yellowstone river flows in the north direction from Yellowstone Lake, it leaves the Jayden Valley and it plunges first over Upper Yellowstone Falls, then a 400 m down over Lower Yellowstone Falls. It then enters the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone which is up to 304 m deep.
Hayden Valley – It is a large sub-alpine valley straddling the Yellowstone River between Yellowstone Falls and Yellowstone Lake. Its floor along the river is an ancient lake bed from a time when Yellowstone Lake was much larger. It is known as one of the best locations to wildlife in Yellowstone.
