Understanding Rigg Motion


The parameters on our slider control the position and rotation of a slider that we’ll position in our path. The slider can be curved, so that is how we control the curvature.There are two unique ways to control the slider.

Use the smooth scroll setting to control the curvature (rotation).The cool part is that you can make one parameter one way and control the other parameter at the same time.For example, this is what the keyboard looks like when we use the smooth scroll setting to control the first parameter and also control the second parameter.

Creating a Rig in After Effects

The basic rig creation tools in After Effects are very straightforward. The first thing you should do is create a ‘Rig’. There are several ways to do this, but the quickest is to select all of the objects in a Project and select Event > Show project settings, which will show a giant selection box.

Click the plus sign next to Event → Add Event and type in “(*)” to trigger this event.The Event settings (specifically “End Point” and “Start Point”) can be adjusted. Next, select all of the objects in a Project and select Event > Show project settings, which will show a giant selection box.

Creating a new project in After Effects

Adding a composition to the project

The project markup we used in the previous tutorial is now gone and the same project will render in each browser. However, the style tag and the various HTML elements are still valid, so they should have been handled correctly. The markup we created at the top of the page is necessary to make the set of props and setState changes look correct in each browser. We also have to keep track of which screenshots were removed (the 16 in the first project, 9 in the second).

Importing motion graphics into the project

Rigging is much easier to setup if you already have your scene setup. You can import that into the Rigged project, allowing you to plug in different devices.When importing the finished motion graphics, the project includes an additional step where you can include in-sync audio tracks.

Import the Movement

Import your video clips

First, we’ll import our clips into the project. I’ve grabbed a clip of the top video menu from my blog, and an intro from my website. To import the video clips, right-click them in Premiere Pro, and select ‘Add’ from the context menu. You’ll then see your videos in the project window, as a group. To import each individual clip, click the ‘Import’ button on the bottom toolbar, and then choose which individual clip you want to import.

Applying Rigg Motion to Text

To begin the process of using Rigg Motion, you’ll need to edit a text object that you want to control with Rigg Motion. Open the Text tool in the Rigging & Editing toolkit. For this tutorial, I used the Large Artistic rectangle template in the Tools palette.Select the name of a color from the Color palette. This is called the “master color”. Right click to set the “Multitouch Levels” property to a custom intensity value.

To put it back, press Command-Alt-Left-Shift-Right to bring it back in. To remove an object, press Command-Alt-Left-Shift-Down. You will have a list of all the objects you’ve added.

Preparing text for animation

Rigging gives you the ability to control an object in motion, such as a slider, with a specific parameter. However, getting started is sometimes difficult, as you may have to learn how to set up the parameters manually for each setting that you want to rig. To make rigging more comfortable, you can set up preset values using steps that make the process quick, efficient, and easy.

We offer the following four steps:

Step 1 – Create a Routine

Rigging is convenient when you only need a few simple tasks. However, using presets can require more repetitive work, and beginners often find it overwhelming. To ease the rigging process and make your job easier, create a sequence of steps to use instead of individual parameters.

After the base button is pressed, the following will happen:

First, it will add a slider control to the base control, and the text box will toggle between one of the preset values (as specified in the configuration file).

Second, it will add an event handler to that slider control. In this case, the event handler will be set to trigger when a specific key is pressed on the keyboard (here, when “Enter” is pressed).Then, it will draw the text box back to the top of the canvas.

Finally, it will call the callback method specified in the configuration file. This callback method will be responsible for actually manipulating the text object that was rigged using the slider.

Adding control points with Rigg Motion

While it does not include the capability to route control points between one control and another, Rigg Motion does include the ability to define a total number of control points at a certain target range, allowing you to create a custom alignment.Rigging is all about creating and using internal triggers to further extend the functionality of your motion graphics. Rigg Motion includes a default series of controls called the Rigg Selection Brush. This series includes the Rigg Symbol, Rigg Lines, Rigg Splines, and Rigg Hinges.

The Rigg Symbol has two trigger points: select center and expand to center.

Once you have chosen your parameters and linked the parameters to a target, it’s time to use Rigg Motion.
