Choosing Internet for Your Business

-

Online business is the future of commerce. It’s not a fad or trend, it’s a transformation in how we shop and buy.

The online marketplace for today’s consumers is vast, nearly limitless. And growing fast – extremely fast. That’s why every business and every professional needs to have a strong online presence. This includes websites, blogs, social media accounts and much more.

Everything you do online centers on your business’ Internet connection, so you need to make sure it’s the best it can be.

Do you need a landline?

While many people think that you need a traditional landline in order to get internet access, this is no longer true. In fact, if you don’t plan on using your phone for anything but emergencies or very occasional calls, it’s probably not worth it to pay for a phone line when there are plenty of other options available.

Decide whether cable or DSL is right for you

If you do still want to have a landline phone in addition to your internet service, then DSL will probably be your best bet. DSL uses the copper wires that run from your telephone pole back to the phone company’s central office in order to deliver data over the same connection as your voice calls, so it’s an ideal option if you still have a landline phone connection in your home or office.

Here are some things to consider when making your business internet choice:

Speed

Businesses that use Voice over IP (VoIP) phone systems, video conferencing and other cloud-based applications need high-speed Internet that won’t lag or drop calls. A good rule of thumb is to go with Internet speeds at least 10 times faster than your current needs.

Reliability

You need an Internet service provider (ISP) that will deliver a consistent level of performance so your business won’t suffer when Internet speeds slow down during peak use periods in the early morning and late afternoon hours. And while all ISPs suffer outages from time to time, look for an ISP with a solid reputation.

Performance

The performance of your Internet service depends on the speed of your connection. Most businesses need a high-speed connection with download speeds greater than 10 Mbps (megabits per second). Cable modem service provides download speeds much faster than this and upload speeds around 3 Mbps. Fiber optic service provides even faster speed at 25 Mbps or more.

Reliability

Businesses cannot afford to be without an Internet connection for long periods of time because it means a loss of productivity and revenue. The reliability of an Internet service depends on how often it goes down. Cable modem and fiber optic services are considered much more reliable than DSL because they rarely, if ever, go down. When service does go out, cable companies are more likely to respond quickly with repair trucks and field technicians as opposed to DSL providers who simply call a repair center and schedule appointments for repairs.
