Cancer Treatment in Africa

Cancer Care and Cancer Awareness are seen in most countries. Africa is one of them. Initially, they didn’t have health care services for cancer patients but gradually places like Kenya, Botswana and Rwanda have started to provide cancer care. Former Kenya minister, Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o described his prostate cancer in 2011. Later, the Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation, Beth Mugo, explained how she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Cancer deaths are increasing in numbers yearly, and it continues to do until 2030. Cancer awareness is on top of the agenda of the government. The earlier it is diagnosed, the sooner and better the person recovers.

Now when services are available in Africa, the cost is the problem with the few. Some cannot afford the treatment as it is expensive compared to other countries. India is one such country where the treatment is affordable. People with high-income gets covered financially for most forms of cancer treatment unlike the middle and lower-income people. The burden of cancer is increasing in African countries due to ageing, chronic infections, and an unhealthy lifestyle. However, access to cancer treatments is limited. For those who can afford but for those who can’t they have been untreated and undetected.

This is now changing as Kenya is the country that is trying to make cancer services accessible to all income groups through publicly-funded health insurance schemes. In Spite of this scheme, cancer patients have to go through a lot of other treatments like high-quality surgical treatment, a package of essential medicines and radiotherapy facilities for treating cancer. It’s difficult for lower-income groups to bear the expenses. But India is a country that provides the best facilities and care in terms of cancer and is surely cheaper than any other country in the world.

Proposing cost efficiency in cancer treatment is the need of the hour. Choosing the right hospital for treating cancer depends on the following parameters such as affordability, type of cancer, technology, doctor experience and services provided by the hospital. Cancer care is long term in nature, and hence it is a recurring expenditure. India offers the same treatment as any other part of the world. All possible technology is in India as other parts of the world. The only difference is cost. The cost in India is relatively cheaper than other countries provided the same quality of treatments to cancer patients. India has the finest surgeons. The treatment abroad can be ten times costlier than India. Suppose the cost of breast cancer treatment in India is 6 lakhs in rupees, the same treatment in the US is for $144,193.  India is at par. The medication launched in abroad is also launched in India. A lot of cancer patients come from the West to get treated.
