4 Common Bathroom Issues and How to Fix Them

There are many potential problems that can occur in your bathroom. While some common issues are fairly easy to fix yourself, others may require the services of a trained plumber. Knowing the difference can save you money, hassle and even severe damage to your home. In this guide, we will explore four of the most common issues in the bathroom and what you should do about them.

Dripping Faucets

A dripping faucet is one of the most common issues to experience in the bathroom. Not only can a constant dripping sound be extremely annoying, but it can also end up costing you a small fortune in water bills!

One of the most likely causes of a dripping faucet is a worn-down washer. A washer is a rubber seal that stops water leaking when the faucet is turned off. However, washers usually become worn-out due to frequent use and are prone to cracking. You can check the washer by unscrewing the handles of the faucet and checking the cartridge for signs of damage. You may need a special tool to do this, but it is usually something that you can fix yourself. You can purchase replacement washers at a variety of outlets.

If you are unable to do this, or if replacing the washer does not fix the problem, calling a professional plumber may be best. Plumbing services like nonpareilsolutions.co.uk can help you with a variety of plumbing-related issues.

Blocked Sink

Clogged sinks, resulting in a sink that is incredibly slow to drain, can be extremely inconvenient. Thankfully, this is one of the easiest bathroom issues to fix. Sink blockages are usually due to a build-up of debris and soap scum in the drain and this can be removed using a basic plunger. If the plunger doesn’t solve the problem, chemical drain cleaner can help or you may even be able to physically reach into the drain using your hands or a tool to remove the debris.

If none of these work, you may still be able to fix the problem without calling a plumber. Simply place a bucket under the p-trap and remove the U-bend by loosening the nuts with a wrench. Most blockages are located in the U-bend.

Blocked Toilet

A blocked toilet can be the most disastrous of the common plumbing issues. Blocked toilets can even lead to flooding if not fixed! Like with a clogged sink, you may be able to fix this issue with a plunger. The air pressure of a plunger will usually take care of the blockage. If this doesn’t work, try using a closet auger. A closet auger is a coil of steel that can be used to reach areas that a plunger cannot.

If neither of these works, it is probably the time to call a plumber!

Low Water Pressure

While usually not as potentially damaging as a blocked sink or toilet, low water pressure is a  common bathroom annoyance. Low water pressure in the sink and/or shower can be frustrating and make the simple act of washing take a long time! If you have ever tried to take a quick shower before leaving for work only to be met with just a small trickle, you will know the feeling.

If water pressure is only low when using hot water, this could signify a boiler issue. If it is low regardless of temperature, this may be due to a mineral deposit blocking the flow of water in the faucet aerator or the faucet cartridge. You can often fix this by removing the aerator and soaking it in vinegar overnight (is there anything vinegar can’t do!?). If this does not solve the problem, or if your aerator is not removable, it is probably best to call a professional plumber.
